WIPO Reports Drop in PCT Patent Filings, But Most Higher Ranking Japanese Companies Filed More in 2009 Than in 2008

On February 8th, WIPO reported a drop of 4.5% in PCT filings, and further reported that industrialized countries showed the most prominent drops in filings. The report documents the downturn with rankings of filings by residence of first applicant, providing also a list of the top 15 countries, and the ranking of top firms making PCT filings in 2009. The number of filings by Japanese firms ranking in the top 100 and the changes from 2008 filings were were as follows, and indicates that most high-ranked Japanese companies actually made more PCT filings in 2009 than in 2008.
